Anime fans in 2021 were treated to the long-awaited return of classic series such as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and My Hero Academia alongside exciting original anime series such as Odd Taxi, The Heike Story, Sonny Boy, and SK8 the Infinity. 

The year 2022 is shaping up to be much the same, with series such as Mob Psycho 100, Vinland Saga, The Devil is a Part-Timer, and even Bleach set to return. There’s no doubt that Chainsaw Man and Uzumaki will make their debuts soon!

It’s impossible to watch everything, so we’ll update our list of the best anime airing in 2022 throughout the year as the season progresses.

ATTACK ON TITAN

There is no doubt that Attack on Titan’s final season is one of the most contentious animes on this year’s list. In regard to Attack on Titan’s final chapters, much has been written, including Hajime Isayama’s implied pro-Imperialist sentiments and the series’ uncomfortable parallels to historical atrocities. This criticism explains why Attack on Titan appears on this list when taking these criticisms into consideration.

With 22 episodes, the director’s Jun Shishido and Yuichiro Hayashi have produced the best-animated interpretation of a messy and divisive conclusion. As a result of the combined one-two punch of the season’s 20th and 21st episodes, the series reveals some of its most apocalyptic imagery ever. DEMON SLAYER: ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT ARC

In the wake of the brutal Mugen Train Arc, Demon Slayer returns with higher stakes than ever before. It is in the Entertainment District arc that young hero Tanjiro and his friends Inosuke and Zenitsu follow flashy Uzui, the Sound Hishara, as he goes undercover to detect a demon lurking within.

Tanjiro and his friends are disguised as courtesans to find the powerful demon in this arc, which begins with more subterfuge than in typical Demon Slayer episodes. This arc is dominated by the Demon Slayers’ final battle with not one, but two powerful demons. Beautifully animated with twists and turns, and most heartbreakingly, a brother-sister relationship between Tanjiro and Nezuko.

SPY X FAMILY

The debut season of Spy x Family is shaping up to be one of the best anime seasons of 2022 despite just four episodes. During the show, Loid Forger is tasked with stopping the leader of the National Unity Party from harming peace relations between neighboring countries through a top-secret operation. A super-elite elementary school will host an event for him to get close to the political leader. Loid is a bachelor, so there’s only one problem.

Anya, his adopted daughter, and Yor, his new wife, enter the picture. Although they do not know Loid’s real identity, they also possess secrets of their own. The telepath Anya is able to read minds, and the assassin Yor is a maniacal killer. As the story begins, the family lives under the same roof, juggling their secrets and maintaining the facade of the family.

There is a strong emotional and comedic core to Anya’s role in the show. In a series of charming character moments, the short, pink-haired child’s earnestness (and sheer stupidity, to be honest) brings the show together. “I’m so excited! She has murdered people for a living.”  No matter how goofy the scenes are, Anya still seems like a simple girl who desires love.. There is humor and sweetness in it, and the show provides a welcome relief from the world’s woes.

RANKING OF KINGS

Ranking of Kings is a fantasy series that measures monarchs according to their strength and actions. He is the son of the king, who is ailing, and is next in line to inherit the throne. Having a limited ability to speak and being physically weak, Bojji mainly communicates with sign language. Despite his lack of characteristics compared to more traditional leaders, he makes up for it with his heart. He literally takes off his shirt in the first episode for a stranger in need.

I’ve never seen an anime protagonist as powerful or compelling as Bojji. There is a sense of urgency in Ranking of Kings, even the most banal moments seem more important than a fight between gods in a non-lethal fight between Bojji and his half-brother.

In a sweeping fantasy world populated with golems, wizards, and giants, his tiny stature and sense of awe make him the perfect protagonist. Although Bojji stands out among the other characters, he is not the only one. His companions, Kage and Daida, are the only survivors of a clan that was once persecuted, as well as his half-brother, who is searching for ways to gain power that connect with him.

You can easily find the Ranking of Kings on Tubi TV APK and at no cost. Bojji is on my list of Kings due to the fact that I would die for him. Despite its underdog storyline, this series offers much more to its audience. The anime adaptation of the manga by Sosuke Toka nails all the elements of a great fantasy series: fascinating creatures, mystical and dark magic, palace intrigue, and a journey into hell. I can’t recommend this series enough, it’s incredible so far.

MY DRESS-UP DARLING

Anime and manga are popular hobbies among high school students Wakana Gojo and Marin Kitagawa: Gojo makes Hina dolls (traditional Japanese dolls), and Marin is a big anime fan. A gaming enthusiast with a passion for cosplay.

The two form a fantastic duo when Marin, a bubbly girl who wears gyaru fashion, asks Gojo to help her make her cosplay. The bubbly and kind personalities of Marin and Gojo make for an interesting relationship that breaks away from the usual setup of a gyaru girl with a quiet boy (where she teases the boy relentlessly while hiding her own feelings).

Though I’m not sure whether I can really recommend My Dress-Up Darling, the story itself is so refreshing that I couldn’t resist including it.
