Medical insurance for civil servants

Job stability is one of the main benefits of being a civil servant, although it is not its only attraction. In fact, both civil servants of the State and those belonging to the Justice Administration or the Special Regime of the Armed Forces are linked to the Special Social Security Regime. This means that they have the right to free access to private healthcare or medical insurance for civil servants. Now, what medical services and benefits can they join?

What is MUFACE? How is it different from Social Security?

Social Security in Spain is the public body that provides health care to all those who are affiliated with it, which is practically the majority of workers. However, MUFACE is another public entity that grants health benefits to State officials, including the spouses and descendants of its members.

These organizations also offer coverage financed by the State, as is the case with the Spanish National Health System, but each entity manages the health care of a specific group.

In this way, the body of civil servants can freely choose the system that most interests them, be it the National Health System or the institution to which their group belongs, whose coverage is also financed by the State.

Great reception of health insurance for civil servants

MUFACE has agreements with different insurers, such as Asisa, Adeslas or DKV, to provide health care to officials who have opted for private urgent care insurance. The same happens in the case of the Mutualidad General Judicial, of which Mapfre, Caser, DKV or Asisa form part, as well as officials of the Armed Forces, who may choose between Asisa or Adeslas.

As we said, officials are the ones who must make the final decision between public or private health, although there is currently great acceptance of the latter. Without going any further, approximately two million Spaniards, including members of MUFACE, ISFAS and MUGEJU, are covered by private insurers.

According to the data that exists in this regard, 8 out of 10 civil servants decide to avail themselves of private health services, thus renouncing the Spanish public system, despite the fact that a very small part of their payroll is taken away to cover this expense.

Main advantages of medical insurance for civil servants

The insurance companies that maintain alliances with these organizations create specific insurance for civil servants. In fact, some of them offer quite complete levels of protection and include medical assistance and other preventive benefits.

As is the case with the rest of the insured, mutual officials have the possibility of adding other additional guarantees to their medical coverage, such as dental insurance for the family or the possibility of choosing between different centers and specialist doctors.

As a general rule, coverage is comprehensive and insurers offer great benefits associated with:

  • Primary and specialized care
  • Preventive programs
  • emergency services
  • Rehabilitation and palliative care
  • Other guarantees such as orthopedics or podiatry
  • Transportation of terminally ill or chronically ill patients

Health care is usually governed by the same requirements and conditions as in the case of the rest of the insured. However, some companies offer certain particular advantages to stand out from other competitors, such as the diagnosis and treatment of sterility or a 24-hour emergency medical line only for mutual members.
